Northern Ireland becoming cultural wasteland
Monday, 20 February 2012
This was in stark contrast to the sorry state of live opera in Northern Ireland.
Dublin seems to be able to attract Opera North for Handel's Giulio Cesare, but not Belfast.
We used to enjoy the Welsh National Opera and Opera theatre company productions when they visited Northern Ireland.
Why can we not have funding support for these?
Instead funding seems to be made available for the more plebeian interests.
If the Northern Ireland culture minister would condescend to address the considerable shortfall of opera funding, and indeed that of classical music, we would all be grateful. At present we are heading towards a culture desert here.
