Northern Ireland must learn to live within means

Published 06/07/2015

I NOTED with some interest the headline (July 2), "Northern Ireland politicians as bad as the Greeks, says Theresa Villiers".

While the Secretary of State does not mention Greece in her excellent article, however "parts of Europe" is a clear reference to the present state of affairs in that country. There are obvious parallels between Greece and Northern Ireland. Both countries are living beyond their means - they do not generate enough income to sustain the economic activity of their respective countries.

Greece, as part of the European Community, can be supported by the community and can borrow to help them in times of need. Northern Ireland, as part of the United Kingdom, is supported by Her Majesty's Government - not by borrowing from the Treasury, but by the Barnett Formula, of which Northern Ireland is the greatest beneficiary.

Ms Villers states the obvious when she says that we need "to live within our means as a country".

But she fails to state the equally obvious - it is the height of foolishness to bite the hand that feeds you.
