Nothing has been learned from 9/11

Published 18/11/2015

In the wake of the 9/11 atrocity, a wise letter-writer said we should forgive those behind it.

The reason - there will always be lunatics wishing to 'destroy the west' - decent human beings wish for peace. Forgiving terror exposes their nonsense. Bombing people and curtailing civil liberties helps terrorists.

Naturally we ignored this. Fighting is easier than thinking. We bombed innocents and trampled on hard-won freedoms. We must learn from our response to 9/11 - forgive terrorists and so isolate them.

We won't, of course. The fainthearts will cry for futile vengeance and surveillance. We will recruit more terrorists by bombing innocents and weaken our resolve by snooping. Do we ever learn?
