Nothing shocking over Civil Service sickness

I have read the recent articles on Civil Service sickness levels and I’m quite shocked that anyone else is shocked.

I worked for the Civil Service for many years in various departments and can state quite clearly that it is encouraged from line managers that sickness be taken — especially with the long-term. I was told several times to go on the sick and say that I was depressed or stressed.

Until the sick pay privileges for 3-6 months on full pay and further again on half-pay are removed, this will continue. It certainly isn’t because of workloads.

These figures won’t drop until ministers take away the ridiculous entitlements — although, with the stranglehold Nipsa and the other unions have, this may prove problematic.
