Number of gay people is not as high as reported

Published 23/04/2015

With reference to the article on Justin McAleese (News, April 20), I see that, once again, the myth of 10% of people being gay has been quoted, whereas in both the UK and the USA the most recent surveys have both concluded that only 1.6% of the population are, in fact, homosexual.

I should also like to point out that many, if not most, children around the age of puberty go through a phase of being unsure of their sexuality as part of the growing-up process.

But most of them eventually come through that and, even of those in the 16-24 age range who believe they are gay, quite a large percentage eventually realise they are not.

So, although I am not disputing Justin McAleese's sexuality, should our young people not be told these things, instead of being made to believe that their sexual identity is fixed at that age, when it is not?
