Obama wrong to promote shale gas
President Obama has woken up to the dangers of coal as an energy source, but he seems to think shale gas is the solution.
In 2012, Obama said of fracking: "We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years, and will take every possible action to safely develop this energy source."
But shale gas is still a fossil fuel.
Annual emissions of carbon dioxide have risen by 60% in this period. Renewable energy (excluding hydro) accounts for just 2% of global primary energy, while in the UK fracking is subsidised at the expense of renewables.
There is little hope for civilisation until political leaders wake up to the dangers of all fossil fuels.
