Our athletes deserve to be recognised

Published 13/09/2012

I first raised the possibility of a public reception for Northern Ireland’s London 2012 athletes in the Belfast Telegraph and I’m delighted that the paper is still campaigning for their achievements to be recognised by an appropriate event (News, September 11).

All of our Olympics and Paralympics competitors, from both Team GB and Team Ireland, could be invited to a celebration at a venue like the Odyssey arena.

This would be a marvellous opportunity to celebrate young people and sport in Northern Ireland, without any need for flags or contentious trappings.

NI Conservatives believe in Northern Ireland, we believe in our young people and we support calls for a public London 2012 celebration in Belfast.
