Overloaded Assembly is no laughing matter

Published 20/04/2016

I MOVED over to Northern Ireland some 18 months ago from Cardiff to take up a teaching post.

I understand the regional election for the Northern Ireland Assembly is taking place on May 5.

However, could someone please explain why the Assembly has 108 seats when the electorate population is just 1.2m? In Wales we have an electorate population of around 2.2m, with only 60 Assembly Members.

Why does Northern Ireland appear to have too many politicians for its small size?

Also, I noticed advertising posters for Fossetts Circus alongside election posters.

Is the NI Assembly looking for clowns? I think we should be told.
