Paramilitaries under pressure

Letters to the editor should be sent to: 124-144 Royal Avenue, Belfast BT1 1EB. E-mail: writeback@belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Many weeks ago the Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie began piling the pressure on the UDA in an attempt to make them give up their guns and give up control of Protestant housing estates.

At that time she was opposed by the politicians of the DUP.

Now Ian Paisley Jnr (Belfast Telegraph, November 10) has acknowledged that " ordinary loyalist communities don't want pariahs on their backs".

I hope this is the first sign that the DUP will now support the Social Development Minister in her attempt to persuade the UDA to give up their guns and give up their drug dealing and organised crime within Protestant communities.
