Plastic bag tax will penalise working class

I WAS disappointed, but not surprised, to read in the letters page that Daithi McKay has endorsed introducing a plastic bag levy (Write Back, December 17).

This flat-rate tax will only penalise the working class and the poor in our society.

This cost to ordinary households far outweighs any green credentials which it may help. This levy comes after his party, Sinn Fein, and the rest of the fat cats up on the hill have just introduced in their Budget more savage cuts in public services and jobs.

We must oppose these attacks on our standard of living with the same solidarity and militancy as our counterparts across the water.
