Police officers need protection

I AM writing concerning the issue of Personal Protection Weapons (PPWs) for serving police officers.

It is vital that our police officers, living in communities like the one that I represent in Fermanagh, are given the means to protect themselves from murderous dissident republican criminals.

My own party, the DUP, has been to the forefront of the campaign to ensure that the obstacles being placed in the path of our police officers to having PPW certificates renewed or granted are removed. I am pleased that progress is being made on this issue and look forward to a positive outcome.

At a time when the dissident republican terrorist threat is at its highest point, it is vital that officers have access to PPWs to protect themselves and their families from those who want to plunge our country into death and bloodshed.
