Protecting EMA is investment in people's future

At the recent NUS-USI conference in Enniskillen, we launched a new survey on Education Maintenance Allowance.

We are campaigning to protect EMA as we believe that any cut would hit students from lower income backgrounds very hard. Many people would be forced to quit their studies to earn money to make ends meet.

EMA must be protected to ensure that everyone who wants to can continue in education, and can reach their potential.

I sincerely hope that the Government does not underestimate the crucial role EMA plays in enabling people to continue their studies.

Maintaining EMA at its current levels is a solid investment in people's futures. There has been much discussion regarding how to ensure young people not in education, employment or training reach their potential.

If EMA were cut in any way, this would exacerbate this issue and could significantly increase the number of young people in this category.

We will be using the findings of this survey to bolster the already strong case for maintaining EMA at its current level.

I would strongly encourage all students who receive EMA to complete the survey at www.nussurveys.org.uk and help us safeguard EMA for the future.
