The decision by the PSNI to abdicate responsibility with regard to protecting the rights of the minority Catholic communities of Ballyclare and Carrickfergus has potentially very significant consequences for the relationship between the nationalist community and the police.
As a Sinn Fein representative committed to supporting a non-partisan policing service, I find it utterly unacceptable that the PSNI would decide that it is better to facilitate the intimidation of beleaguered minority Catholic populations in predominantly loyalist areas as opposed to taking a stand against those intent on instilling fear in the minds of a vulnerable Catholic community.
