Red card for a spear tackle is right penalty

Published 18/10/2011

It seems unfair that a Welshman should be asked to pay the ultimate price for a spear tackle made on Brian O'Driscoll by two All Blacks in 2005, but sport can be cruel (Sport, October 17).

Wales were outstanding and played with real heroism, but Alain Rolland's decision to show Sam Warburton the red card was the right thing to do.

The lift, twist and drop tackle is dangerous and has no place in any game.

Wales will come again, that is for sure. If Mr Rolland's decision saves one player from life in a wheelchair it will be worth it.

It would be foolish to say that it was central to the defeat. One senses that the best has yet to come from this gifted young side.
