Reducing the size of bins is just nonsense
It is difficult to comprehend the logic behind the proposal to reduce the size of our bins.
Will a 20% reduction in bin size lead to a 20% reduction in waste generated? Will shoppers reduce their purchases, with inevitable packaging? I think not. There should be more bins to accommodate more sorting and more recycling. Imposing a reduction in bin size will do nothing to encourage better disposal habits.
Perhaps the city councillors who are considering this move would do well to visit some Scandinavian countries and see how they, with some efficiency, recycle waste and use it as a fuel to generate electricity. But then that would have a ring of common sense about it – a rather alien concept to our city fathers.
