Refusing to vote only helps the extremists
Perhaps Fionola Meredith's "right not to vote" (Comment, June 9) could alternatively be described as her right not to bother to present herself at the polling station and make her mark - unless there is a guarantee that her preferred candidate will win.
Such an attitude, if adopted by everyone all the time, will certainly ensure the same extremists get elected. God forbid we would encourage anyone from a smaller party, with a vision for a more enlightened society, by giving them a vote in the knowledge that, even though it will not bear fruit immediately, it may lead to future success. Well done, Fionola.
