Saddened at fate of our beloved hymns

I can sympathise with Victor Gordon (Comment, November 17). I thought it was only the Church of Ireland which was changing the words of our beloved hymns. Believe me, I know how he feels.

One of my favourite hymns is Rock of Ages. I have sung that hymn since my childhood (I'm in my 80s now) and it holds very happy memories for me.

It really saddens me when the new version is sung. Like Victor, I sing the treasured older words.

Sadly, it isn't only the hymns which have changed. The Lord's Prayer and the Apostles' Creed have suffered the same fate.

Victor, take comfort: "Change and decay in all around I see. O Though who changest not, abide in me".
