Sadistic monsters who torture badgers must be punished

Saturday, 28 February 2009

The Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the police deserve the highest praise following their recent joint operation against the sadistic monsters who get their kicks from torturing and mutilating our badgers.

What can you say about people who enjoy watching Northern Ireland’s favourite wild mammal suffer a long and agonising death while also allowing their dogs to sustain horrible injuries?

The ghouls who take part in the vile activity of badger-baiting really take callousness and cowardice to a new level and bring shame on Northern Ireland.

All of these yellow-bellied bullies need to be named and shamed and also any landowners who have knowingly allowed them onto their property to commit these crimes.

Of course, they will intimidate anyone who stands in their way, but like the cowards they are, they will do so from the shadows.

We also need an end to terrier and lurcher clubs as they are the breeding ground for badger-baiting.

Even the Countryside Alliance, which describes terrier and lurcher work as legitimate sports, must now take a closer look at its participants and re-evaluate their position because whether conducted against foxes or badgers, it is equally brutal.

Lawmakers and politicians should hang their heads in collective shame as they have all failed the badger miserably and have left these nocturnal creatures open to this horrible abuse.

Are laws not to protect the victim and punish the perpetrator? Sadly, for the badger the reverse seems to be true.

Until long custodial sentences become the norm, heavy fines issued and life bans from being in possession of animals introduced, sadly Brock will have to endure continued persecution.

The community must not only be outraged by the contents of this latest expose but must make their voices heard loud and clear. Stand up for the badger!

Terrierman, (the name says it all)
Thankfully your neanderthal opinion is not shared by the vast majority of civilized human beings. If you think that goading one creature to tear another apart is acceptable, then If I were you I'd seek help.

I guess no one looks at the damage that badgers do to farmers grounds or the livestock that has to be put down because of the holes that they dig in the ground. Livestock in the field walking around step into a badger hole and break there leg it has to be put down and the farmer is out the money to raise that livestock. Are we to put up our livelyhood just so wild animals can over run our lives. When to many laws are passed to protect every little creature and they start to infringe in your homes and citys then what are the animal rights activist going to do then? Wild animals dont police there own population. I dont condone badger baiting, but dont take using hounds and dogs for hunting all about being a blood sport.

I do not support these so-called sports in any way, but couldn't help notice the irony in statements like this when the letter is then not signed with a real name. Very confusing.

You must know why police have failed to arrest the easily identifiable perpetrators of badger baiting ! It is wrong to on the scale of things to call other human beings 'evil scum'- in doing so you are joining the indefensible camp of the wrongdoer.

These people have no pity and treat living things appallingly for their depraved amusement. These are men, I'll use the word loosely, who also treat their wives and children badly. All who support this "sport" for the underclasses are societies lowest of the low.

Evil scum. I would love the chance to 'flush' them out of their homes and subject them to the same torture that they so enthusiastically mete out to badgers.

It's disgusting, not only badger baiting, but bear baiting, fox hunting, hare coursing, bird shooting, dog fighting - but any cruely caused to animals. These men (it is mostly men who do it) are nothing but cowards and bullies. We pride ourselves as "a nation of animal lovers" - please don't make me laugh

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Surprise, surprise. Peter Robinson has been to his first gaelic match, Martin McGuinness is heading for Windsor Park and the Ulster Unionists have scored another own goal.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
