Sensible action over rape 'game'

Friday, 7 August 2009

The Seattle Chapter of the National Organization for Women [Seattle NOW] would like to sincerely thank Amazon.com for removing the game 'Rapelay' from all of their sites.

As an organization that is committed to the ending of violence against women around the world we were horrified to read the story on the Belfast Telegraph's website that one of our most respected local businesses was promoting and selling a product that considered rape of women and children a 'game'.

Now we are proud to inform our working partners in Kenya and South Africa that Amazon.com has stopped marketing not only 'Rapelay' but 'Hustler Asian Fever Sex Objects' and 'Female Yazuka Tale'. Thank you, again.

We sincerely hope that Amazon will cease marketing all products that glorify such violence and degradation, including 'Bible Black' and 'Bible Black New Testament Vol. 2: Second Scripture'.

While we understand that the First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the freedom of speech that is vitally important to all of us, we do not consider that this protection extends to the right to profit from speech.

We would like to thank Amazon for making a decision that in the best interests of women and children and the Belfast Telegraph for bringing the issue to our attention.

In hope of safety for all,

Susan Lebow,
Thalia Syracopoulos,

Nice work on getting them withdrawn but why was anyone selling these in first place? I don't get it. Why do these games even exist?

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Why bringing up our kids should be child's play... or maybe it's not

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
