Sinn Fein's call for a 'Yes' vote is cynical tactic

Published 03/05/2011

For many, myself included, the announcement that Sinn Fein is calling for a 'Yes' vote in the AV referendum says it all.

For a party that refuses to represent its constituents at Westminster to campaign for a system which, they believe, will increase their tally of MPs to not go to Westminster should sound alarms for all true democrats.

Clearly, Sinn Fein has calculated that, under AV, they will be able to nudge at least the SDLP out of seats like South Down and, possibly, Foyle, thereby reducing representation of people at the national Parliament even further.

This is clearly neither progressive nor democratic; in fact, it is everything Sinn Fein has stood for over the years - destructive and damaging.

On May 5, all democrats, regardless of their constitutional position, must vote 'No' to ensure full democratic representation of all the people of Northern Ireland at Westminster.

Anything else will be a rejection of the basic tenets of a modern democratic society.
