Peter Sheridan, a former PSNI assistant chief constable, claims that if cigarettes were sold in plain packs, it would amount to a "smuggler's charter" (News, September 26). In fact, existing packs are already easy to forge.
To combat this, covert markings are put on packs to help enforcement officials. These covert markings will remain.
Removing the branding won't eliminate smoking, but it will give millions one less reason to start.
