Spare a fiver?" >

Can anyone tell me why there is an ongoing shortage of £5 notes in the shops?

Recently, on a Friday evening at the end of a full working day, the till in a large supermarket in east Belfast had three £5 notes.

The staff were at their wit's end for the want of some change, so they were loading the customers with £1 coins.

Sometimes, there is the odd English fiver to be had, but very few local ones.

Is it because so many of the 'George Best specials' have gone into the mattress?
