Straight-talking is best policy for UUP leadership

Contrary to the views expressed by Richard Williams and John McKimmon in the Belfast Telegraph (Write Back, September 21), having watched with interest the Ulster Unionist leadership campaign, I can honestly say that I believe Tom Elliott is best-placed to lead the party forward.

One of Tom's greatest strengths is that, when he speaks, you know where you stand. This is a trait which is not common in many politicians and is a mark of a man of integrity.

Furthermore, his record of service, to both the Ulster Unionist Party and to his country, as a member of the UDR, demonstrates a passionate loyalty to the causes which he believes in.

This is what I, and I believe many other people in Northern Ireland, want to see from our leaders, along with honesty and commitment.

When I use my vote at the Waterfront Hall, it will be with confidence that I am entrusting the leadership to a man who values the party and its heritage as much as I do.

I know Tom Elliott will do our party proud and lead us forward.
