Students support marriage equality

Published 08/04/2014

THE Union of Students Ireland (USI) annual congress took place from March 31 to April 3 in Athlone, Westmeath.

In response to the announcement that Sinn Fein would be tabling a motion in the Assembly on marriage equality on April 29, an emergency motion – proposed by Queen's University Students' Union – was unanimously adopted by the congress.

The motion mandates the officer board of USI to actively lobby MLAs to vote in support of marriage equality in Northern Ireland. USI represents 354,000 students in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Students from Queen's, the University of Ulster and many of the further education colleges in Northern Ireland are affiliated to USI.

The overwhelming support for the motion reflects a huge level of support for marriage equality among the student population.
