During the last recession, many graduates, faced with a tight job market, opted for teacher training as an insurance policy.
This gave them a professional qualification and many young people then strengthened the profession considerably.
Faced now with up to 100 competitors for every job, it will be interesting to see if a surge in teaching applications occurs this year. Confronted with the triple-whammy of longer working years, increased pension contributions and smaller pensions, this does seem unlikely.
