The reason pensioners suffer

The ill, the frail, the dispossessed all merit special care, but none are more meritorious than the 'deserving elderly'.

Senior citizens, who have contributed to occupational pensions, saved for a rainy day or sought to leave something to children are punished. Income tax on pensions, fees to nursing homes and inheritance tax undermine the quality of life.

While fiscal power lies at Westminster, our MLAs/MPs should be seeking to improve the lot of elderly citizens. Abolition of income tax on occupational pensions would be a good start.
