Threat of joint authority in Northern Ireland will focus minds

HOW often do we hear it said that it is for the people of Northern Ireland themselves to decide their own future? This would be understandable were we to behave as a responsible and mature society, paying our own way.

The behaviour of our politicians is often puerile. The reason the living standards here are maintained is due to the massive subsidy the people in Britain have provided over 40 years.

Since England is paying the bills and the rest of Ireland is sharing much of our shame, London and Dublin should issue an ultimatum that, if we don't work together constructively, then it's joint authority and they will run this place together. We might actually get used to this 50/50 set-up and even get to like each other.
