Time for us to give up Lent?

IT is the first day of April and Easter Sunday in 19 days' time, so we are still working our way through Lent. But what is Lent really for?

Is it 'for' a time set aside, like Advent, as preparation time for major faith events – the Nativity, the Crucifixion and Resurrection – related to Jesus that form the narrative and spiritual base for the Christian Church? Is it 'for' a time to give up chocolate – good for the soul, but also good for the Body Mass Index? What would happen if there was no Lent? Is it time to relinquish Lent and just go straight for Easter and the eggs?
