Time to reopen City Hospital A&E facilities

May I commend Dr Russell McLaughlin for having the courage and the integrity to step aside from his post as clinical director at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Many of us were deeply concerned when the A&E Department at Belfast City Hospital shut.

We feared that patient safety would be compromised and that hospital staff would be put under even greater pressure. It looks like our concerns were well-founded. I would ask our Health Minister to consider reopening the Belfast City Hospital's A&E Department, before more patient lives, and the sanity of hospital staff are put at risk.

I would also ask the public to support any future campaigns to save A&E services. None of us know when we might need them.
