Titanic numbers don't add up

Published 24/04/2012

Please be advised that the number of Titanic victims listed in your recent article (News, April 16) was given as 1,512. This is incorrect.

The total number of victims was 1,496, which happens to agree with the total number of names that were listed and published in the article.

This number also agrees with our most recent findings that there were 1,496 lost and 712 saved from Titanic.

Complete lists of lost and saved are given in our book, Samuel Halpern et al, Report Into the Loss of the Titanic - A Centennial Reappraisal (The History Press, 2011).
