Tough decision on a sensitive issue

Published 06/10/2015

"Who made those allegations?" asks a character in Joyce's Ulysses. "I," says Joe. "I'm the alligator."

In his piece about the UK Press regulator Ipso, Mick Hume is firmly on the side of the alligators.

The allegations which prompted this ruling, made by Dr Kevin McCarthy of Cork, may fall within the remit of free speech and I personally agree that the Belfast Telegraph is entitled to print something with which the Editor may not necessarily agree. But was it wise to do so?

The Belfast Telegraph may be sensitive when it comes to the complex politics of Northern Ireland, but European sensitivities, it seems, are another matter.
