Tourism needs a broader push

Published 24/02/2014

I REFER to the well-written article by Don Anderson (DebateNI, February 19), responding in part to my comments on promoting tourism.

Contrary to the sub-headline, I did not suggest, or imply, that Northern Ireland should "join forces with the rest of the UK instead of being yoked to the Republic". In fact, I agree with Don, saying, "We'll only flourish if we do both".

The news article on page 2 of the same day's paper quotes me accurately as stating, "We should do both by enhancing tourist interests across the island of Ireland and the whole of the UK."

My point is that I am not convinced that Northern Ireland's tourist industry interests are best served by relying only on promotions through Tourism Ireland.
