Trump is still not fit to be president and Eastwood is still right to reject any invitation to White House
letter of the day: election rumblings
Your Viewpoint, 'SDLP leader Eastwood must get real over Donald Trump' (Comment, November 11), reflects a general narrative that, now the US election is over and Donald Trump has won, his attitudes and behaviour can be explained away as merely the heat of the campaign trail; the people have spoken and democracy prevails.
But what is it exactly that Colum Eastwood needs to "get real" about? Donald Trump is the same man as president-elect as he was before election night. He was a serial liar, a misogynist, a racist, and a vulgarian then and he still is today. His thin-skinned ego, his early morning Twitter rants, his desire for revenge on those that slight him; the things which made him temperamentally unfit to hold the office of president before the election have not gone away.
His ignorance of the basics of foreign affairs is staggering, yet he alone knows all the answers. He is a climate-change denier, believing that the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive.
Trump is a dangerous demagogue. His dystopian vision of America is false.
The fitness of Trump "the man" to lead the most powerful country in the world stands above party politics. Every day that we normalise his behaviour emboldens his excess.
In the clamour of our politicians to embrace the new order in America, Mr Eastwood reminds us that fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
