UK vote on Europe to affect Republic

Published 20/08/2015

Given the volume of traffic in people and goods between the several parts of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, which makes borders within and between the British Isles an anachronism, no one can say what new system might come in should the UK withdraw from the European Union.

The Republic of Ireland will do everything possible to prevent it from happening.

The outcome need not be that speculated by Malachi O'Doherty (August 18). The EU could in its endeavours to tidy up various taxation levels in a closer fiscal union suggest that the Republic move closer to the UK in a new relation or union with the European Union.
