Ukip talking sense on health tourism

Published 08/04/2015

Following recent media coverage of comments by Ukip leader Nigel Farage on health tourism and migrants with HIV/Aids, there is no doubt the media has not been objective.

Both Canada and Australia implement strict health screening as part of their immigration process. In Australia for example, a mandatory health check filters those that are afflicted with tuberculosis, or a condition that may result in the applicant being a public health threat to the Australian community.

Similarly, in Canada, health checks can result in a refusal when it "might reasonably be expected to cause excessive demands on health or social services". (There are, of course, exceptions and criteria.)

This is Ukip's and Nigel Farage's common sense position.
