UK's Philippines help not enough

Published 18/11/2013

THE UK's donation of £10m to the Philippines is pathetic. Many countries in Africa have a rapidly expanding economy and India, as we know, have their space programme. It is the responsibility of these countries to look after their own people.

The terrible tragedy in the Philippines is a different kettle of fish. These people did not bring this disaster upon themselves – their only 'crime' was to be born in a part of the world which, at times, has extreme and volatile weather conditions.

We have here a genuine reason for giving aid and the measly £10m we are giving is less than a fifth of what the UK sends to Brussels for the European Union each day.
