Unionist choices keep it in family

Published 30/04/2010

I wish to express my disappointment at the two main unionist parties' choice of General Election candidates in the Mid-Ulster area.

The Ulster Unionists and Conservatives have selected Sandra Overend, a daughter of Mid-Ulster MLA Billy Armstrong, who was involved in the expenses row over payments to his wife. It should be noted that Sandra also works for her father so is already getting paid from the public purse.

The DUP has selected Ian McCrea, son of the Rev William McCrea, who has also been caught up in the expenses row over his purchase of office furniture. Furthermore, nearly all of the McCrea children and wives work for either William or Ian.

I feel that voting for either of these candidates would be an endorsement of "jobs for the family".

I have no doubt in my mind that both these candidates are using this election as a stepping-stone to next year's Assembly election, when I could be faced with the same problem.
