United Airlines and supposed 'subsidy'

I would like to draw your attention to an assertion in John Mulgrew's article (Business, January 6) re Belfast International Airport.

He states that United Airlines was to receive a £9m subsidy: "But this was pulled due to European state aid rules".

This is simply wrong. In fact the EU Commission did not overrule the subsidy, because no application for state aid clearance was ever made by the Northern Ireland Executive. United Airlines took their decision on commercial grounds.
