Violent reactions can't be justified

Published 11/10/2012

John Morgan (Write Back, October 5) is right that "the right to publish offensive material should be fully protected. However, making and distributing deliberately provocative material, seemingly only for the purposes of generating a (preferably violent) response, is both juvenile and unhelpful."

On the other hand, reacting to such provocation by attacking (and even murdering) people who have no connection with it can never be justified.

If it were, we should be seeing and claiming to justify Jews firebombing Arab and Iranian embassies around the world and shooting their staff on an almost daily basis in reaction to the regular outpourings of crude antisemitic articles and cartoons in the Press of Muslim states.
