Voting system is hardly fair
While I agree with Ultonian (Writeback, April 20) that the lack of debate in Northern Ireland on the May 5 referendum is incredible, that's all I agree with.
First-past-the-post is viewed as having the advantage of strong government. But last year's election proved the fallacy of this.
It seems paradoxical to argue that we should stick with FPTP, but also that politics is stagnating.
If our current system is so fair, why did Alex Maskey pull out of South Belfast and the DUP and UUP from Fermanagh/South Tyrone? In recent years Zimbabwe has been the only country to adopt our FPTP system - not my idea of a proud export of a grand tradition.
