What’s happening to the cost of diesel?

Published 02/09/2008

With rising prices at filling stations, I wonder if any readers can answer some questions which have vexed me in recent weeks?

Does anyone know why the cost of diesel outstrips the cost of petrol when not so long ago diesel was cheaper than petrol?

Diesel cars are more popular now than in the past, so are the oil companies simply cashing in once again or is the Exchequer increasing fuel duty on diesel at a steeper rate than petrol?

Why is there a difference of around 13p per litre between diesel and petrol in Northern Ireland, whereas the difference in the Republic is seven cents?
