Where are rights of unborn in the abortion debate?

Published 08/02/2016

The Sixth Commandment seems clear: all life is to be cherished and murder is to be punished - by death in some countries, or the life sentence in the UK.

Recently, Northern Ireland has seen court action on the abortion laws - eg, the preservation of life versus the right of choice.

These arguments challenge us to ask: "What is the definition of life and where does it begin - inside or outside of the womb"?

The Bible teaches that life begins in the womb: "For you formed my inward parts; you covered me in my mother's womb." (Psalm 139: 13-17); "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you." (Jeremiah 1:5).

But God is full of compassion and love; He would never ask a woman to carry a dead child in her womb - that would be cruel.

But if there is a semblance of life, surely that child deserves to live - be it if only for hours/days - as it is a living being? Today's secular liberalism argues for freedom of choice. What freedom is there for the unborn child?
