An old man and his granddaughter were crossing the road together when they were struck by an oncoming vehicle.
By a bizarre coincidence, the injuries to grandfather and grand-daughter were identical. Both suffered severe, debilitating, long-term injuries.
After several weeks, the old man was transferred to a private nursing home, while his grand-daughter continued to be cared for by surgeons, qualified nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other professionals in hospital.
Fairly soon, the old man was presented with a bill for £2,000-plus for his monthly fee, rapidly followed by another and another.
His granddaughter, meanwhile, continued to benefit from a free health service.
