Who wants 11-plus?

Tuesday, 4 March 2008

I never thought I would see the Belfast Telegraph print propaganda such as the daily message that the majority of people support the 11-plus

Where did you get this information? I was never asked, nor were the people I know.

Give every pupil in every school in Northern Ireland a form to take home to their parents with the question: Do you want the 11-plus kept or abolished?

Don't just go with the views of some old duffers who seem to get a lot of time on the media for their views.

The next thing they will want is the PSNI back in green shirts.

I remember Stephen Nolan, on his radio show, asking for a vote on whether the people of the Shankill supported the public humiliation of two thieves. The reply left him so traumatised he hasn't been well since, as 80% of those asked supported the action.

So you ask for a vote, but give Diazepam to the duffers that dominate your columns as the result may not be what you expect. By the way, I have five out of eight grandchildren going to Queen's University, Befast. The other three are still at secondary school.

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Parties need better defence in Stormont's game of two halves

Surprise, surprise. Peter Robinson has been to his first gaelic match, Martin McGuinness is heading for Windsor Park and the Ulster Unionists have scored another own goal.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
