Why Alliance's plans need to be flagged up

Alliance group leader on Belfast City Council, Maire Hendron, has stated that "most councils in Britain only fly their flag on certain designated days". This is nonsense. Alliance should publish the facts to back up the claim.

DUP councillors surveyed councils throughout Great Britain. It found 90 out of 94 councils (96%) fly the Union flag year round.

Alliance has presented its misinformation in support of drastically reducing the flying of the Union flag on Belfast City Hall to just 18 days per year.

Research carried out by Belfast City Council has revealed a very low level of public objection to the flying of the flag - just seven letters of complaint in 10 years.

Our City Hall is the municipal headquarters and centrepiece of our capital city. It is entirely appropriate that the Union flag should be flown from our City Hall.

This matter will be decided by Alliance votes. The case for a change of policy is unproven.

Alliance should respect the principle of consent and step back from damaging community relations by imposing a policy change.
