Why council staff take sick leave

Published 20/01/2009

It's time the Local Government Auditor stopped spending time and money on glossy reports if he is not prepared to look at the real cause of high absenteeism in Northern Ireland council workforces.

It is easy to criticise, but he has ignored Press correspondence in recent months that urged him to look at the political bullying under which local authority workers live.

Having had human resources experience of three councils for nearly 30 years, it is my experience that many staff reluctantly take sick leave because they are driven to it by councillors who are not answerable to anyone.
