Why so many jobs at BBC NI?

I was stunned to read recently that BBC Northern Ireland has 650 direct employees. Considering that many non-news functions have been outsourced, one can only wonder how many unknown 'jobs' this monolith truly provides.

With so much content networked direct from the mainland, one can only conclude the BBC's priority is self-preservation.
