Wise words that still hold true to this day

Published 27/07/2016

As one who has often responded critically to the comments of your religion correspondent, Alf McCreary, may I commend him for his article "Wise words of Isaac Watts ... " (Saturday Review, July 23).

Alf makes a very perceptive analysis of the events of the last month and offers a truism which many people of faith would embrace.

Samuel Rodigast (1649-1708), son of a Lutheran minister, penned a hymn in German, which has come down to us in various English translations, the first verse of which translates thus:

Whate'er my God ordains is right,

Holy His will abideth.

I will be still whate'er He does,

And follow where He guideth.

He is my God,

Though dark my road.

He holds me that I shall not fall

Wherefore to Him I leave it all.
