Write Back: Alf McCreary lets religion off too easily

Behind every conflict, war, murder, bigotry and pogrom you find religion hiding somewhere in the shadows, if not leading the charge.

Thompson_TX_USA

Thompson_TX_USA: Yeah, you would never see atheists involved in war, never mind starting a war, now would you?

Chrisdoh

Chrisdoh: Not even remotely as much.

One_More_Thing

Chrisdoh: Well, historically, there haven't been remotely as many of them, so that's hardly surprising.

Bernard29

Bernard29: True. And the more of them there are, the less violent humanity gets, which flies in the face of the religious shackle that without one, or other, god, we'd all be going to hell in a handcart.

One_More_Thing

One_More_Thing: Sorry, but that Steven Pinker claim has been well and truly debunked, especially since the 20th century, with the greatest rise in the number of atheists, also saw more violent conflict than any other century.

Bernard29

Bernard29: That doesn't sound like a big moral development to me. Not as a percentage of people on the planet.

Thompson_TX_USA

"Religion is the superstition of feeble minds." Apologies to Edmund Burke.

Paddy Fields

Paddy Fields: My favourite is: "I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." (Stephen F Roberts)
