I refer to the letter from the Australian living in Belfast (Write Back, August 14).

The current environment in Belfast where each side of the underclass takes delight in burning symbols belonging to the other is somewhat of an improvement.

In years gone by, it would have been the burning of homes, murders and other hate crimes which would have symbolised difference, it is therefore a real step forward that flags are the target of hatred and not people. I fully appreciate how much of an anachronism this behaviour may appear to an outsider but we shouldn't ignore the real progress.
